3 things to remember when deciding what to wear for family pictures

What to Wear for Summer Family Pictures?

May 29, 2018 in Laura Farr Photography

Okay so you booked your family session, that's awesome! Yay for one more thing you can cross of your to do list! If you haven't done that yet no worries, you can book your session HERE or get in contact with me HERE.

Next you'll usually have the question, "Okay so what should we all wear?"

It's up to you if you want to use family pictures as an excuse to buy new clothes. You definitely can, but I'm 99% sure you already have outfits that will go nicely together. You don't have to buy all new outfits for everyone, but you definitely can if you'd like. It's totally up to you.

Whether you're digging through your closets or purchasing a few items, you'll want to keep these 3 tips in mind for what to wear for family pictures.

what to wear for family pictures

1. Start with some article of clothing you already own and that you love!

If picking out outfits and coordinating them is fun for you then go all out! If you find it stressful, which you might considering you clicked on this article, then I would say to keep it simple and start with what you have.

Maybe you have a favorite blouse that you love wearing or maybe your two little boys have the cutest button up shirts that you love seeing them in. Or maybe your little girl has a super cute summer dress...

Once you find ONE thing that you already have that you love, then base the other outfits off of that.

Remember you don't need to match. You just want to go together.

2. Just be You!

So we know that photo shoots aren't everyone's favorite (although my goal is to change that)! Getting your picture taken can feel awkward (again, I'd like to change your mindset on that too). I know the last thing you want is to not feel comfortable with what you're wearing and same goes for your kiddos.

Now is not the time to buy a crazy color or type of clothing that you normally don't wear.

It's easy to see something on Pinterest or Instagram and think, yes I want that! But do you like it because of how the model looks or even just how the photo was taken?

You should pick something to wear for a photo shoot that you are comfortable in. Now obviously I don't mean yoga pants, but I mean wear something that makes you feel like YOU!

If I came over to your house and said, "Okay I need to do a quick photo shoot with you in ten minutes." What would you go grab out of your closet? What is one of your go to, favorite outfits?..Just wear that!

You might not even realize it, but some of your favorite outfits are probably the colors that you love and that compliment your skin tone. For me I've learned that light pinks and blues are my go to colors, so if I know I'll be in a photo, I make sure to wear one of those.

3. Keep in mind where you'll be taking your pictures

I know it seems silly, but sometimes we pick out the cutest outfits and hadn't really thought about how hot or cold or windy it was going to be. It's always smart to keep your location in mind to help you with what colors to wear and how warm or cold you need to dress.

In the summer it's always safe to dress like it's going to be warm/hot and then have a sweater or cardigan nearby you can put on. You can always add layers, but when it's hot and humid you can only take so many off before..well you know.

If you are freezing or sweating like crazy, you'll be able to tell from your face in the photos. Be sure to dress accordingly with options to add or take off a layer if needed.

It's also good to keep in mind the location when you're picking certain colors to wear. Just think of how they will look where you'll be taking the photos. Will you be on the beach, at the park, by a bright wall mural, somewhere in the city or in your home?

Lastly, just remember if you want your photos to be classic and timeless, then dress that way.

Stay away from trends and lean towards the style that you love and want to be remembered by. Although it's always fun looking back on those photos from the 80's and 90's, you might want to be a little classier so people don't know exactly what year your photos were taken.

Hope that helps! If you have your photo session booked then I can't wait! For more great info make sure you're on my email list then I send out each month to stay in touch!

A few months ago this family was looking for a piano teacher and I was looking for another student. It ended up being a great match and I LOVED coming to their home each Monday to teach their little Simone.

So I went on a social media fast for a week and it was so lovely I ended up doing it for two weeks.
I wouldn’t say I was consumed by social media or that it affected my confidence or anything like that, but I did notice that I wasn’t bei

With having cancer, moving, having a baby and being in the middle of a pandemic, I took a break from photography and focused my attention on something I could easily do from home. My good friend Kristin and I started a podcast that turned into a lovely small business helping creative, intentional women make more time for what they love!
